[28] Para-church: A ministry not connected to a local church or group of churches, but accomplishing things churches would want to participate in. There are a host of missions organizations that are not aligned with any one church or denomination, but whose goals complement those of the local church or denomination. An example of a missions parachurch organization would be Youth With A Mission. On YWAM’s web site they describe themselves this way: “We are a mixture of people from all over the world, from 149 countries in fact. We come from numerous different Christian denominations and speak hundreds of languages.” (www.ywam.org)

[98] Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

[110] http://chi.gospelcom.net/GLIMPSEF/Glimpses/glmps064.shtml - “In the 1870s Horatio Spafford was a successful Chicago lawyer and a close friend of evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Spafford had invested heavily in real estate, but the Chicago fire of 1871 wiped out his holdings. His son had died shortly before the disaster.
“Spafford and his family desperately needed a rest so in 1873 he planned a trip to Europe with his wife and four daughters. While in Great Britain he also hoped to help Moody and Sankey with their evangelistic tour. Last minute business caused Spafford to delay his departure, but he sent his wife and four daughters on the S. S. Ville Du Havre as scheduled, promising to follow in a few days. On November 22 the English ship Lochearn struck the ship, and it sank in twelve minutes. Several days later the survivors landed at Cardiff, Wales, and Mrs. Spafford cabled her husband the brief message, ‘Saved alone.’
“When Horatio Spafford made the ocean crossing to meet his grieving wife, he sailed near the place where his four daughters had sunk to the ocean depths. There, in the midst of his sorrow, he wrote … unforgettable words that have brought solace to so many in grief.”

[120] A Port-a-Cath® is a type of device for intravenous access in patients who require frequent or continuous administration of intravenous substances. The major users of Port-a-Caths are oncology patients but recently, they have been adapted for treating hemodialysis patients as well. The Port-a-Cath® is produced by Smiths Medical MD, Inc. However, the term is used generically for similar devices by other manufacturers (usually as portacath). Other synonymous brand names include Bardport, Passport, Infuse-a-Port, Medi-Port, and Lifesite (for hemodialysis patients). The term: totally implantable venous access system (TIVAS) is also used.
[121] “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world (emphasis mine), to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.”
[122] I was recently searching the Internet and came across many sites and articles on the effect cancer has on sexuality and lovemaking. I especially appreciated the work I found that some people in Great Britain did, as it was tastefully and respectfully conveyed. I sure wish I had had this information back in 1998.
The most common observations centered around these assertions: some who have cancer will experience no changes in sexual desire or how they feel about themselves sexually while others will lose interest in sex and feel very constantly tired. And that goes for spouses, too. Sometimes the form of cancer your spouse has won’t effect what goes on in your bedroom.
However, because we’re all so different and have different sexual needs, it’s impossible to say exactly how cancer will affect each person’s sexuality and sex life, or how their husband or wife may react to all the changes.
The most single most important (and frequently mentioned) universal observation coming from these web sites is that husbands and wives must be able to talk. There was even information about how to talk about sex and sexuality, self image, body image, and commonplace fears.
You should know that if you have cancer, and you’re undergoing treatment – be it radiation, chemotherapy, etc. – you may experience pain, nausea, gross fatigue, anxiety, breathing difficulties, bowel problems, depression, irritability, and changes in hormonal output, just to name the most common side effects. In other words, you just won’t feel like having sex, and that goes for men and women.
Some people say that they feel less attractive because of the presence of cancer in their life. That will compounded if you don’t have the energy to take as much interest in cleanliness, your clothes, hair or make up as you did before.
Men with cancer could lose testicles or their penis. Women could lose a breast, maybe both, or have a complete hysterectomy. Communication – with no assumptions – is critically important if Mars and Venus ever hope to align.
If you’re the spouse of someone in this situation, you may be very worried about your loved one and how low they seem to be feeling. Here’s some good news. Most people come through treatment phases and in time will feel better, or feel like things are back under control. (Just remember though, that tiredness can last a long time after treatments are finished.)
There are other matters that must be discussed by the couple facing cancer besides sex problems. Practical things like job and money, how the cancer is effecting the kids, cleanup around the house, etc.
Take a look at the Internet. You’ll find some encouragement and good ideas. Here’s a few examples of what you can take a look at: www.netdoctor.co.uk/sex_relationships/ facts/sexcancer.htm and www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=14883.

[126] A geode is a sphere shaped rock which contains a hollow cavity lined with crystals. Geodes begin as bubbles in volcanic rock … Over time, the outer shell of the spherical shape hardens, and water containing silica precipitation forms on the inside walls of the hollow cavity within the geode. The silica precipitation can contain any variety of dissolved minerals, the most common being quartz, but amethyst and calcite are also found. Each geode is unique in composition and can only be truly discovered when cracked open or cut with a rock saw. The size and formation of crystals and different shades of color within the crystals make each geode special. The rough exterior of the geode gives no indication of the secrets held within its core. Geodes are found throughout the world, but the most concentrated areas are located in the deserts. Volcanic ash beds, or regions containing limestone, are common geode locations. © 1996-2007 www.desertusa.com/ under minerals&geology

[142] From www.radiologyinfo.org/ - CT (computed tomography), sometimes called CAT scan, uses special x-ray equipment to obtain image data from different angles around the body and then uses computer processing of the information to show a cross-section of body tissues and organs. CT imaging is particularly useful because it can show several types of tissue—lung, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels—with great clarity. Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.

All rights reserved. http://www.medicinenet.com/ca_125/article.htm. According to Dr. Melissa Conrad-Stoppler and Dr. William C. Shiel, Jr., “ CA 125 is a protein that is a so-called tumor marker or biomarker, which is a substance that is found in greater concentration in tumor cells than in other cells of the body. In particular, CA 125 is present in greater concentration in ovarian cancer cells than in other cells. Its function is not currently understood. CA stands for cancer antigen. It is not possible to interpret the meaning of an abnormally high CA 125 without additional information about the particular patient being evaluated. The reason is that this protein can be increased in many different benign and malignant conditions. The two most frequent situations in which CA 125 is used is to monitor patients with a known cancer (malignancy) or as one of several tests in the workup of a patient suspected of having a tumor. The most common use of the test is the monitoring of women with known cancer of the ovary (ovarian cancer). In the patient who is known to have a malignancy, such as ovarian cancer, the CA 125 level can be monitored periodically. A decreasing level generally indicates that therapy, including chemotherapy, has been effective, while an increasing level indicates tumor recurrence. Because of test variation, small changes are usually not considered significant. A doubling or halving of the previous value would be important.

[191] 1 John 4:16b-18 NIV: “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in Him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like Him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

[213] Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a chronic syndrome characterized by diffuse or specific muscle, joint, or bone pain, fatigue, and a wide range of other symptoms. It is not contagious. It affects more females than males, with a ratio of 9:1 by ACR (American College of Rheumatology) criteria. Fibromyalgia is seen in 3% to 6% of the general population, and is most commonly diagnosed in individuals between the ages of 20 and 50. Because the nature of fibromyalgia is not well understood, some physicians believe that it may be psychosomatic or psychogenic. The disease itself is neither life-threatening nor progressive, though the degree of symptoms may vary greatly from day to day. MedicineNet.com tells us that “Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues to the lungs. The iron contained in hemoglobin is responsible for the red color of blood.
“The hemoglobin level is expressed as the amount of hemoglobin in grams (gm) per deciliter (dl) of whole blood, a deciliter being 100 milliliters. The normal ranges for hemoglobin depend on the age and, beginning in adolescence, the sex of the person.
“ … Low hemoglobin is referred to as being anemic. There are many reasons for anemia. Some of the more common reasons are loss of blood (traumatic injury, surgery, bleeding colon cancer), nutritional deficiency (iron, vitamin B12, folate), bone marrow problems (replacement of bone marrow by cancer, suppression by chemotherapy drugs, kidney failure), and abnormal hemoglobin (sickle cell anemia).”
MedicineNet, Inc. includes a chart with “normal ranges” of hemoglobin for various age and sex groups. They suggest that women after middle age should have a hemoglobin range of 11.7-13.8 gm/dl., and they add: All of these values may vary slightly between laboratories. Some laboratories do not differentiate between adult and "after middle age" hemoglobin values.

[299] It’s worth know that this little prayer was in The New England Primer, first published between 1688 and 1690 by English printer Benjamin Harris. It became the most successful educational textbook published in colonial and the early days of United States history. Many of its selections were drawn from the King James Version of the Bible and others were original. Among the topics discussed are respect to parental figures, sin, and salvation. Some versions contained the Westminster Shorter Catechism; others contained John Cotton's shorter catechism, known as Milk for Babes; and some contained both. The primer remained in print well into the 19th century and was even used until the 20th. A reported 2 million copies were sold in the 1700s. No copies of editions before 1727 are known to survive. Nowadays juicers will cost from $75 to $300. (We paid over $500 for our Champion back in 2001, so prices have gone way down as the machines have gotten better.)
